Describe the knife incident. Was alcohol involved? | The knife incident was at the St. Louis Amtrak/Greyhound station while I was waiting for a shuttle to take me to Carbondale, IL to catch a train to New Orleans. I was standing there in the station with my cell phone charging it in some wall socket and a dude approached me to ask the time. Immediately I knew what was up (I could sense it) and started to walk away with my stuff and he flipped out some swiss army knife and held it in attack mode while demanding I give him my backpack. |
The knife incident was at the St. Louis Amtrak/Greyhound station. Damn it, I'm from St. Louis and I know that station. Sorry you had to go there, its a BAD place to be. Hope your time in St Louis wasn't all like that. | No, actually I loved St. Louis except for that station. Gotta love blueberry hill :) |
Man, I was at that station in April. Dammit St. Louis, why do you have to do this to our visitors... | Seriously. |
Now at this point I had been almost 50 days traveling and had an extensive journal with thousands of pics and vids I had taken - Are you planning on posting these online anywhere? Not only would it add credence to your story, it'd probably be pretty interesting for the rest of us. | I have all the pics on my facebook for the most part. I'll throw up the 'mysterious traveler pic' though for you. |
What else did you do in St. Louis? I always wonder what tourists do in my hometown. | Saw the Arch and the Western Expansion Museum. Mmm the botanical garden and the giant park with the huge fountain (forgot the name). I was hanging with some hippies there and we ended up drinking and playing games more than sight seeing haha. |
Forest Park most likely. | Yup! Forest Park! |
you missed the Denver Reddit meetup, bitch. | And sorry I missed the meetup haha. |
How did you get over the feeling that these people were being too nice to you and that you should repay them somehow? | Every time I stayed with my hosts I took them out to dinner any time I could. I only regret saying I'd pay for drinks in new orleans because the girl I stayed with racked up a massive bill haha. |
The only person who wouldn't let me buy them a meal was the nuclear physicist. He was very well off and ended up spending hundreds of dollars on me - but he and I connected pretty good and had some amazing conversations. He told me that I live on the 'fringe' and that I had changed his paradigm on a few things. It's funny because talking with him nearly blew my mind everytime we talked. He also let me drink beers in his hot tub and I got to watch satellites cross over in the night sky from it.
Are you sure it was fleas and not bedbugs? my little encountered bedbugs on several occasions. | There is a good possibility it was bedbugs. |
Did this involve many sexual favors? You are describing a situation where grown men let you stay with them and they bought you things. No way was that free. | Yeah you know what - I totally was expecting something like this but it never happened fortunately. However, in St. Paul I was basically tasked to pay her back in other ways. |
Go on... | When she found out I played guitar she just assumed I was good with my hands -_- |
Go on... | And so I made them all pottery :D. |
How did you break up with your ex? What did you say to her? | I told her that I couldn't see us continuing like we had been. It had been super stressful caring for her and paying for everything. I was about to take on 80k in debt for her and it was like carrying a building of impending doom on my shoulders. She took it well and then immediately started seeing other people so obviously she was quite ok with it. I dunno. |
Holy fuck smart move dude. 80k? Was that for schooling or wedding? | School, and to top it off she didn't take a job for the 3 years she was doing it. |
That's extremely selfish. I'm sorry but as a woman, I would NEVER want to rely on a man financially in that way. It'd be different if we had kids and I was a stay at home mom. I don't blame you at all for not wanting to continue supporting her. She's an adult, not your kid. | Thank you and for the longest time I felt like I was her parent. It really sucked. |
Yeah, that's not an awesome relationship when you feel like you have to take care of the person without it being reciprocated. I'm sorry. Hopefully you learned a ton of things from this girl though, like what not to look for. | Oh I have totally learned. I've become emotionally unavailable to women for the meantime and I have been with more women since I made that decision than I had before. It's weird how that works. |
What made you do it? | I saw my future and hated every second of what was to come. I took a leap of faith and followed the unknown - it was worth it. |
Leap of faith... or become an old man... filled with regret... waiting to die alone.... | Cobb. |
Wow, you sound like me right now (I'm 27). I really wish I could do something like this. I hate my job, hate being debt, hate watching all my friends get married while I remain FA. Somethings gotta give. | Just go. What's stopping you. |
I saw my future and hated every second of what was to come. Did you work in corporate America? | No - I worked for money and not happiness. |
Do you mean sort of like "Into the Wild?" | Yeah but without the dying and giving away all my money :P. |
I just want you to know that you're my hero and I have an abundant amount of respect for you. | I am you. |
I've been back for a bit now and it is still VERY weird. Nothing seems familiar and all the 'things' I once held dear to me now mean almost nothing. In fact in the 7 days I've been back - this is my first time on the computer and the only thing I can think of is how weird this all feels. In fact, in the two months I was gone it seemed like almost eight months - time slowed down in an extreme way. My roommate said to me when I got back how quickly time had flown, and all I could think of was how I completely forgot what he looked like. Just wondering, I guess you considered it a good experience? That whole sensation you describe above seems pretty freaky. What made it worth doing, and how bad was coping with your new, foreign viewpoint on life? | It was an experience that I'll never take for granted. It was worth doing because by the end I knew that I had done what I set out to do and coping with my new viewpoint was very liberating and exciting. There was nothing bad about it. |
Too many liabilities, lack of disposable income right now. I'd have to be debt free so I dont ruin my credit score. | Ah yes, the game. |
Working for happiness is just as bad. You'll never reach it. Just enjoy the ride. | Just enjoy the ride, but make sure you're steering the car ;P. |
The only way to escape the game is to play the game. | It's a shitty game though. I'm still playing it. |
What did you do for food...did you eat out everyday?! How much did the whole trip cost? I would never have the balls to do something like this and for that I think you're amazing. | I ate out a lot definitely. But the cool thing was eating different foods in different local 'favorite' restaraunts. That was the nice thing about couch surfing was that you got the real culture of that city staying with people that actually lived there. There were quite a few times that I got made food by my hosts and that was always awesome. |
And to say you'd never have the balls to do something like that is simply a matter of perspective and time - I wouldn't have been able to do something like this a year ago, and up until the day I left I was really scared shitless about it. You never know.
The whole trip was under $2k.
Did you gain any weight from eating out so much? | I actually lost weight because I ended up only eating once or twice a day for periods of time. |
Heh, next time get a camp stove. I spent 15 days hitch hiking across the US and Canada to Alaska and spent less than $100. I would have spent less, but I bought nice wool long-johns along the way. :) | Damn I could take a few tips from you ;P. |
Who is this love interest? And how awesome was the "cougar attack?" | She was a girl I met in Seattle, and she was a bonified genius. As for the cougar attack, it was awesome until she started seeming really desperate for sex. She tried to liquor me up really good - and pretty much succeeded but it started getting very weird once I noticed how hard she was trying. |
I hope she doesn't read this post. If she is a genius and sees the way you've butchered "bona fide", she may never write you ;) | I meant bonerfied. ;D And she'll probably somehow find this post and lambast me mentally for it - she is a redditor. |
Bona fide. | ARRRGGGHHHH. |
she is a redditor. Are you implying that all these females on Reddit are actually real? | I can confirm one ;D. |
Did this relationship continue after Seattle? | No. And does the number in your name refer to THX 1138? Or Leia's cell block number? :P. |
Coolest story? | I'd have to say the coolest story was when I was able to stop by my old house and see my pet rat Artemis. I sat on the couch with her for a few hours and held her. She died the next morning, but I got to be with her for that last day. |
What prompted the journey? | The journey was prompted by a severe urge to travel. A wanderlust I guess. The whole couchsurfing thing wasn't really a part of that until much closer to the time I left. |
That rat was holding out on dying, fighting for its life so it can be with you one last time before it can die happy. | Thanks for making me all sad about it -_- |
What places are worth visiting? | Sante Fe, NM - Seattle, WA - New Orleans, LA for starters. |
How much did you budget per day including gas, housing, bathing, etc? | Lots of abandoned towns on the rail lines - especially in north dakota and montana. Also the abandoned Union Station in Omaha Nebraska. |
What lessons did you learn that you could forward? | My budget was only for food. 20-40 a day. |
How did you find the train for 61 days? | Live in the present, make the most of NOW and not tomorrow. |
How much did it cost? | Two Rail Passes which totaled about 1000 bucks. Both are on the train - dining car and snack car. You had to crap in a bucket under your seat though... jk there are plenty of toilets. |
What places did you visit? | Listed up top. |
What places did you visit that you don't recommend? | None of them, they were all experiences. |
Where did you have the most fun? | New Orleans. |
What place(s) could you stretch your dollar at? | New Orleans. |
The Newsies song. The Rent song. The Bon Jovi song. In that order. Seriously, what is up with Santa Fe? | It's beautiful. |
Unlimited? Travel anywhere? | You have a certain number of segments - but it's almost impossible to use them all up in the time allotted. And yeah you can go anywhere - you just have to call and book a seat with your reference number. A really good deal and the trains are pretty nice - they have AC chargers :D. |
Me and my friend are going to do a trip like this August to November. We're 2 22y.o swedish dudes going cross country from New York to San Fran via Florida and Texas in the south. We're also going to be doing couchsurfing and alot of traveling by train and bus. Do you have any neat tips about couchsurfing for example. Do you think it will be hard to find hosts willing to accept 2 twenty-something dudes from Europe? Do you have any tips for cool towns to visit or places we MUST see, that you saw during your trip? What is the one thing we MUST NOT forget to bring? | You will have no problem finding hosts because you are from Europe. All the American hosts want the foreigners, and in fact it was more difficult for me to find a place because I was from the US and not European. My advice would be to stay with people your own age to have more of a fun time, and to not be afraid to try new things even if they sound horrible. You should really try to visit New Orleans and stay with a fun group of people down there if you can. I went to Frenchman Street everynight and had a blast with the locals. Also if you get a chance check out D.C. because the architecture is amazing there. And if you make it to Nevada, definitely have some fun in Vegas :) Learn up on your poker skills though haha. Definitely bring a towel and an umbrella. And sunglasses for sure haha. Ziplock bags also - trust me on that one. |
So what was the diplomat's opinion on WikiLeaks, if you may describe that without violating any trust? | So basically he told me that Wikileaks has changed the entire game for him. Other countries no longer freely give out the information they once did to the US out of caution. The relationships with other countries, primarily Saudi Arabia, has been damaged and will take time to be rebuilt. |
He himself says that he strongly disagrees with the US governments knee jerk reaction to start using illegal means to stop the flood of information, and he knows that Julian is being setup but "That's the way it works." as he said.
He also said that Bradley Manning was a traitor in the highest terms and deserves his fair punishment for what he did, but he doesn't agree to the conditions and overall ridiculousness of his current treatment.
When I asked him if some of his cables were leaked he answered that most of them were. He also said sincerely and genuinely that the people working as diplomats are for the most part honest working people and have no secret or corrupt plans.
I'm curious: why would someone like a diplomat offer his couch for surfing on the internet? | He wanted to couchsurf Egypt. |
Was anyone really creepy that you found via couchsurfing? Any creepy stories you would like to share? | I stayed with a gay couple in Kansas City and the boyfriend of the guy I stayed with had down syndrome I think. He gave me this look like he wanted to either sleep with me or kill me and it creeped me the fuck out. It was super intense in only a way that a person with downs can do. |
Were you ever afraid of someone that you met? | That was probably the creepiest person/experience. |
Honestly, if that was your worst experience, I think you got off lightly. | Yeah I definitely did. All my other creepy experiences were done at train stations and I was able to escape them quickly. |
How safe do you think this would be for a single woman to do? | It could be safe if you planned it right - definitely safer by car because the train stations can be sketchy. You can couchsurf with families and women too which is completely safe. |
If you want take another girl along with you and you'll be fine. Bring a can of mace though to be sure :) I brought my knife.
Where are you poorly timed gimli? | He's slacking. |
So... whats next? What are you going to do for the rest of your life? | I'm going to take a few more weeks off to rest and play L.A. Noire and then hit a couple interview I have with HP and possibly Intel. I'm also going to invest more time into writing science fiction and producing electronica. The latter are just hobbies, but doing them really makes me happy. |
What did you pack in your suitcase? | One towel, one pair of jeans, one pair of shorts, a few pair of socks and boxer briefs, about six shirts, toothbrush/deodorant/cologne/elec.shave, swim trunks, sandals, and a mask of george washington (half mask). |
Oh and a bunch of zip lock bags :) Came in super handy.
Ziploc bags, quart size. never travel without em. | Amen to that! |
How old are you? I've considered doing this for the last year or so. | I'm 27. You should definitely do this - and I honestly believe everyone should do something similar at some point in their lives. |
I'm 26 and been with my gf almost fiancee for 7 years and ready to go crazy. What are you going to do for a career path/job now? | I have promising leads at both Intel and HP here in Colorado. I have networked well with HP before I left and they have invited me for a couple interviews. |
However I don't know for sure if I want to make a career of this - I'm really thinking of doing this whole trip over in Europe, but with a friend next time.
As for your situation - I can't give you relationship advice but maybe you can take her along with you??
If you quit your job, I assume you have no medical insurance. How did you cope with tonsillitis without insurance, in a distant, unfamiliar location? | I was very lucky and got tonsilitis the day before I rolled into Los Angeles so I was able to die on my parents couch for a few days. I had to pay about 200 bucks for doctors visits and pills though. So expensive -_- |
The tonsilitis was so bad that I was running 103 fever for a couple days and couldn't eat or drink much of anything for almost a week. I lost 10lbs - eat that Jenny Craig.
Edit - Crazy side story: I was having a lot of lucid dreams during my feverish state and one was of me in the desert with some guy looking over a plateau. It felt very weird and not much like a normal dream - it was almost a foretelling dream (which sounds weird but read on). My parents had a guest coming over that they hadn't seen in a long time and I was asked to join. Turned out to be a nuclear physicist that lived in New Mexico and he invited me to stay with him - since I had that dream I took him up on it - and I literally relived the scene in my dream with him in Los Alamos. He ended up being the most interesting person I'd met on the trip, and during our conversations I had a couple paradigm shifts in my way of thinking. Weird - but true.
Sparked an interest. What was so interesting about him, and what shifts in the way you think happened? | He was the most humble genius you'd ever meet and his way of thinking was so spot on. He had completely submitted to living in the present and was always giving back to the community. |
In fact while I was with him I worked at a homeless shelter for a night cooking enchiladas for about 100 people. He does this weekly and then gives free massage therapy to aids patients. We had numerous discussions on life, love, god, man, and anything else which some might shy away from.
His take on life was to always embrace the moment. Live in the now and not in the future. It's a very simple concept but one which rarely is acted on. I know my life previously was lived for the future at the sacrifice of the present - and this is what made me unhappy.
I know just spouting off this as something I learned would be insignificant - but I wholely and truly live this new paradigm now. It was what I was missing - my life is much more fulfilling and I am having a great time being back with friends and such. I've also been 100x more productive since I got back. And this was only one aspect I learned from my stay with this guy but it was probably the most profound that I took with me.
I am browsing couch surfing and there are quite a lot of people who you could have stayed with. What was your decision making process like when looking for someone's couch to crash on? Did you ever just see a chicks picture and think "Hey, she's pretty hot, let's see if she'll host me?" | I did get the urge to stay with girls based on their cuteness and I did a couple times. Mostly though I went for people that were down to earth in their profiles - and I also looked for people unemployed because I tended to arrive on weekdays. |
You describe a lot of situations that could have turned violent, and I have to wonder whether you think it would be realistic for a young woman to do something like this and have a reasonable hope of staying safe? Did you meet any girls doing anything really similar to this? | All the girls I met who were doing something similar were driving their own vehicles and/or traveling in a group. |
Can you tell us about the stuff you carried with you in your pack and on your person? Was there ever a moment where you felt that you just wanted to stop and go home? | I almost went home in Sante Fe. I had a large sense of dread about the rest of the trip and was very close to just grabbing a bus to Denver, but I knew I'd regret it later so I forced myself to get on the train and head to Kansas City - I'm glad I did because the latter half of my trip was really the most exciting. |
Long time couchsurfer. I've both stayed at people's places and I've hosted people. I'm not kidding when I say that it has transformed me from an introvert to the most-travelled guy around. Been to three different continents, stayed at people's houses, never had a bad experience and have hosted many people at my home. Maybe I should do a separate AMA? | For sure! |
I really want to do this kind of trip, especially in America, as I want to see my own country before I go and see others. However, you said it cost less than $2000, and I'm graduating from high school and only have about a $1,000 saved up. What kind of expenses did you have to think about? Assuming your couchsurfing host didn't make you pay, I was thinking just the transportation and food and emergency money in case something happened with your host and you had to go to a hotel? Also, how did you get internet access for couchsurfing while on the road? Is there like a smartphone app or something? | I really only thought about food expenses, that was it. I just used the internet via web browser on my smartphone. |
You took all this time off and are going to take a few more weeks off to play LA Noire... how do you have the money to fund this? I know you said you didn't spend much for lodging but you still had to spend it on Amtrak and food and drinks and generally going out and supplies/materials and whatnot. And I assume you probably were still paying rent in your place with your roommate or else you'd have no home to go back to. And now you're going to take a few more weeks off, still paying rent, etc. Did you save up a bunch of money or something? If so, about how much to fund this from start to finish (including now while you are still unemployed)? | I was sort of saving for a house before I left everything behind. So yeah I had some money saved up - but I don't plan to just sit on it till it's all gone. |
How much total have you needed to spend from beginning to end and even now while you're jobless? You chose to spend the house money on this trip instead of buying a house? Is your plan still to buy a house? So presumably you must take some more time to save up again to afford a house? | I have no desire to buy a home in the near future. Rent is way cheaper and more flexible for me - the whole trip came in under 2k. |
So what was your reason for buying a house before? Why did you change your mind? I keep getting told my renting is just throwing money away. | I wanted to buy a house with my ex gf. I changed my mind because by buying that house I was giving my soul up to being locked down in life. I like renting because it gives me freedom... one day I'm sure when I'm older I'll want to buy a house, but for now I'm happy just renting. |
What constitutes a segment? One station to another? One route to another? | A segment is everytime you step on a new train. YOu can do a 1 hour trip segment or a 3 day trip segment - both count as one. |
I know this AMA is rotten but I just read it in the Redditor. How much did you end up spending once everything was said and done? | Around $2000. |
Amazing! I've couchsurfed with friends I've known but never on couchsurfing.com. Gotta try that now! Question: Did you catch the tonsillitis from hooking up? Did you ever get any other bugs on the trip? | No it wasn't from hooking up and to be honest I'm not sure where it was from. That was the only time I got sick on my whole trip. |
Was it freeing? That sounds beautiful. Were you scared for the majority of the time? | It was very freeing - I was only scared a few times, but it was those moments that helped strengthen me for whatever came next. |
How did cope with the concept that you might not get a job when you are done adventuring? | I never thought about it, or cared about it... so I didn't have to cope with something I didn't care about. |
Interesting. Why didn't you care about it? I am asking, because this is the biggest hurdle for me to do something like this and I haven't found a way to neutralize it. | Well it helped that I saved a small bit of money for the months after the trip, but honestly I think it's all a moment of stopping your mind from thinking in the future and gripping onto the moment with no care as to where it leads you. |
Did you consider youth hostels? what are your feelings on youth hostels in the us. EDIT: ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY ON THIS? | I've never had to stay in one but I hear they are all ok. |
Did that happen because so much was changing that you were excited and didn't care what happened? | It was a lot of that yeah. It's also the fact that I've simply shifted away from caring so much about being apart of the world and instead decided to make it apart of me. That may not make sense, but to me it does. |
Did you go to Larry Flint's strip joint in NOLA? | Haha no unfortunately. |
This trip sounds awesome, and even though I'm in my 50s I could pull it off. My problem is I don't like this sick culture enough to go "see it up close." I would rather try Canada maybe, or someplace else. Do you think it would be as much fun to do it with a buddy? | Canada would be very cool - I met two guys on the train who did my trip in Canada and they said it was a really great time. I think it would be a different experience doing it with a friend - definitely a worthwhile one. |
Great AMA so far, I just have a question though. Are you an adventurous person to start, or was this a complete shock? | Yeh I've never done something like this before, it was a shock definitely. |
Does anyone in their 30's couchsurf? I just want to do something different in life. My life is too much of a staid routine. | A ton do. |
Did you lose or gain any weight? | I lost about 10lbs when I got back. |
What made you want to move in the first place? | Change. |
Today I learned about US rail passes. | And they're cheap too. 45 days was $750 and 15 days was $380. |
"I've been back for a bit now and it is still VERY weird. Nothing seems familiar and all the 'things' I once held dear to me now mean almost nothing. In fact in the 7 days I've been back - this is my first time on the computer and the only thing I can think of is how weird this all feels." | You know!?!? It's unreal. |
I have all the pics on my facebook for the most part. I'll throw up the 'mysterious traveler pic' though for you. | There me on the train heading to Seattle from St. Paul. Somebody took this pic of me while I wasn't looking and then gave it to me via facebook. |
FYI, you can do this without quitting, divorcing/breaking up, or being a dude. A month or two on the road is incredibly liberating though, I agree! | Yeah definitely agree - it just happened to be what I personally needed. I would encourage everyone to do something like this at some point - it's something you'll take with you until you die. |
I really just want to drop out of my real life and become a full time grad student. | Life is comprised of choices, you just have to make them and not look back :) |
